Product Description

Synthetic European Scrape Oboe Reeds Légère European Scrape oboe reeds respond instantly and are ready to play straight from the box. The design allows for a warm, centered sound with ease of projection. They never need to be moistened and are available in three strengths, Medium-Soft, Medium and Medium-Hard. All reeds are made to an initial aperture between 0.68-0.72 mm, but this will change after the reed is played. The total length of the reed is 69.8-70.2 mm and it plays at 440-442 Hz depending on the positioning in the reed well. They never need to be soaked and are unaffected by any weather or humidity. While students should start with Medium-Soft or Medium strengths, advanced players may find any of the three strengths suitable for their embouchure. Their ease of playing is the reason these reeds are heard in some of the most prestigious orchestras and on stages and recording studios around the world. Legere warns American players that this reed may be more "resistant" than an American scrape reed. Don't worry about that. This reed is somewhere between medium and hard.Timbre of this reed is darker than the cane reeds I usually play. That is not a complaint, I have had "darker" and "brighter" cane reeds and adjust to the situation.Seems like high notes above A are a little low. I can get the correct pitch, just have to work a little harder. Probably a result of the "resistant" European Scrape?Low register response is good. Because of the darker quality, there is none of the unpleasant honking that can happen on low C or Bb.Dynamic range is...different. Seems like it is easier to play softly in low register than my cane reeds. Harder (for me) to get fortissimo high notes. I could play a good dynamic range in all registers. I think I can adjust to these differences. The reed came out of the box, and was ready to play the instant I inserted it into my old-but-reliable oboe. Instantly ready, consistent sound, unaffected by moisture. I assume the longevity will be similar to the sax reeds which seem to last longer than 5 cane reeds. What else could we ask for? (maybe lower price, just sayin')If you double(triple) on other instruments, you will really appreciate the fact that the reed will not dry out. Perfect for pit orchestras.I CAN'T WAIT FOR LEGERE TO MAKE AN ENGLISH HORN REED! Are you listening, Monsieur Legere? The most stressful situation is when the EH has been waiting for 30 minutes, you pick it up and have SECONDS to get ready, and the next note you play is a solo. (Thank you, Dvorak! Sym 8 mvt 1 has 4 measures of English Horn terror! :-)
