Swan harmonicas are great harmonicas designed to get players started with high quality harps at a reasonable price. This model is a 12 hole, 48 reed/tone chromatic harmonica in the key of C. They feature solid thick brass reed plates, ABS combs and sturdy chrome plated cover plates. Plays and feels like other brands costing twice the price. A chromatic harmonica is like having two harmonicas in one! Due to the slide that completely changes the notes. In the rest position (slide not depressed) the harmonica is in the key of" c", then when pushed in, the chromatic is tuned one half step to c#. This allows the chromatic to be played in any major or minor key making it an incredibly versatile instrument. The slid also allows the player to "bend" notes. The chamber of a chromatic harp is also much larger than a diatonic and creates a distinct tone that is both fuller and warmer than the smaller diatonic harmonicas. It includes a hard plastic case and was built to give you years and years of enjoyment. The item comes with round-month piece.

I've been playing diatonic harps for a few years now, mostly rock, blues, country and contemporary Christian. I wanted to push myself and learn something new and in my search stumbled upon Chromatic harmonicas. A search of Amazon brought me to this guy which appeared to fit the bill and at a price I could live with. (I justified it as a 'Birthday gift' to myself.) :)It arrived, I plucked it from the box, found a secluded corner and began exploring. Let me say clearly; I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS INSTRUMENT!The build quality is much better than expected. To be honest, at less than half the price for a comparable Honer, I wasn't expecting much. But 'much' I got! A further fear was the slide; "How well was that engineered at this price point?", I wondered. In reality it is easy, smooth, and presents absolutely ZERO obstacles in playing this instrument. The final question for me was tuning. I hooked a mic to my TC-Helicon VoiceTone Correct box and watch the pitch meter as I explored the scales. For all the world, I believe this harmonica to be spot on, even in the lowest registers! So, how does it play? Like a dream! Bends are right there when you want them. The tone is rich and full. And a surprise (an 'Easter Egg', as we in electronics & software engineering call them); On most notes (sadly, not all) if you are playing a single hole and move slightly to the right - not enough to bring in the next note! - you are rewarded with a sort of 'chorusing' effect! I'm so comfortable with the little guy now that I know right where those are and grab them whenever possible. They are so pretty!Oh, did I say 'little guy'? Well, in truth, this is a rather big guy compared to all my 10-hole diatonics. But I just view that as being 'so much more instrument' to explore! I read somewhere once that "Playing harmonica let's you strike a cool pose while appearing to eat a sandwich." (LOL) Well, this is either a large sandwich or a small hoagie. [grin]I've only had it for two weeks (probably 21 total hours of play), so it isn't yet my 'go to' guy. But I take it with me everywhere and I'm sure it'll get more and more 'stage time' as I get more comfortable with it. No one that has heard it to this day has said anything less than "That one sounds pretty!"So thank you Swan for this gem! If I ever get notoriety we'll talk endorsement. ;)I ordered and received this harmonica. The description is confusing. The photo on Amazon shows a trapezoidal mouthpiece, but the wording clearly says the mouthpiece is round. As you can see from my photos, the one I got is certainly not round.I do NOT like trapezoidal mouthpieces and much prefer rounded ones.Amazon customer service is sending me a replacement. If that mouthpiece is round, I’ll return the flat one. If it, too, is flat…well, to be continued. It is a wonderful instrument for what it cost. It plays very well except for reeds sticking a bit on the the 11 hole hole....... I believe that it is loosening some.. I have owned other chromatic harps so I expect to have problems on the ones with windsaver valves.. I have a Swan 64 that I need new reeds for on the 15th and 16th holes.. I got a bit forceful blowing and drawing to loosen them up and need to find someone that can fix it.. I am being very gentle on this new one's stubborn reed and it is gradually improving sound wise..Bought the Swan Chromatic Harmonica, 12 holes.Looked just exactly like my old Hohner, but highest octave is squeaky hard to play.Returning same for credit - will spend the extra money for a Hohner.BTW, the Swan harmonica comes complete with a 4 page instruction flyer - in Chinese! :-)Craig Jenningsthere are much smaller - easier to wield chromatics out there. I wish I'd chosen one. Too big, too heavy. Poor choice. The Swan Chromatic seems well made and plays well, but it is difficult to play with anything other than a moderate volume. Some notes sound crunchy and out of tune. I can't use it, I've been playing standard harmonica's for a few year and this one is not built to the same standards as Hohner at all. I gave it to my niece for a toy now.Large! Heavy! Think that is OK. Surprised that this came from China :(The Swan 1248 was recommended by experts on YOU TUBE and those who purchased with Amazon. Based on their recommendations, I bought it and was NOT DISAPPOINTED. I am a beginner. I already own a Marine Band 1896 and a Suzuki Tremolo. The Swan 1248 completes my collection for now. Ideal Chromatic at a good price. The high end is barely playable and it slider gets stuck frequently.good
