I do not care about all the "lobbying and begging of Us, Us, Us, U2, please" that they did to get to sing their paltry version for the Wim Wenders film of the same name, the only song titled "Faraway So Close", that any human should listen to is Mr. Cave and The Bad Seeds version. It is hands down ( and I would know), the single best written, arranged, performed, and recorded "for any reason" song this Man and his band have ever recorded. This song is perfection from beginning to end. Trivia, Mr.Cave did not know what this movie's plot was when he wrote this, he knew it was a sequel to the film, "Wings of Desire" and he knew the "working title". This song evokes exactly what this movie aimed for and achieved, "Faraway So Close", the original one by Wim Wenders stands as a testimony to near perfect filmmaking, when trying to show how life can affect, even the best of all living creatures, how it can make you stumble, get knocked down, lose your way, and then redeemed by a gesture of true, understood, and lone self sacrifice. If you are wise you will never watch nor mention any ridiculous American re-makes, yes Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan I am referring to you; around me or there will be a reckoning! It is odd when someone with this type of talent, who can tell you a story from beginning to end inside of 4 or 5 minutes exists, but I am very happy he does.I don't mind controversy, I know it could be very well argued that Mr.Cave is not the best song writer of our age ( of course I know what Leonard Cohen can do I am not an idiot and we all know he passed the mantle to Nick Cave), however you would lose the argument. There is no doubt that this song is and should be the ultimate and most revered of Mr. Cave's work in any band at any time. If you really want to know how great this movie is and how beautifully this song plays into it, then I beg you listen to this version; and yes, you are all welcome, because I am not wrong. I could easily talk about Lou Reed and Mr.Gronemeyer, but I am not going to.So, listen, transcend, and be forever changed.
