Breathe Life Into Your Pond If you experience murky water, debris accumulation, or are struggling to maintain a healthy fish population, your pond may be suffering from a lack of oxygen and proper circulation. Benefits of Increased Oxygen Increased oxygen promotes a healthier and more balanced aquatic environment and supports all aquatic organisms, such as fish and plants. In addition, increasing oxygen improves water quality by reducing the buildup of harmful gases and organic matter, which can lead to stagnation and foul odors. Oxygenation also enhances the nutrient cycle, aiding in the decomposition of organic material and the growth of beneficial bacteria. Although waterfalls and fountain sprays add oxygen to the water, they are not always enough and should be supplemented with diffused aeration. With bottom-diffused aeration, water is more efficiently circulated, which increases dissolved oxygen levels. Bottom-diffused aeration: Reduces Maintenance – In conjunction with proper filtration, adding aeration will keep your pond cleaner longer. This means you can spend more time relaxing around your pond rather than spending time cleaning it.Saves Money – Aeration systems are energy-efficient and can help you cut down on your energy bill. These systems are designed to run 24/7, yet only cost a few bucks per month. Rather than running a costly waterfall pump all the time, use a pump only when you are there to enjoy it and rely on a properly sized aeration system to keep the dissolved oxygen levels high. This small change can save you hundreds of dollars each year.Supports Beneficial Bacteria: Beneficial bacteria are aerobic and need oxygen to survive. These bacteria consume the excess nutrients in your pond, which fuel algae growth and pond muck accumulation. Aeration allows these bacteria to work harder to clean up your pond, leading to an overall cleaner pond. In addition, fish love aeration! Your fish will gather around and enjoy the bubbles coming from the diffusers. FAQs How do I choose the right size aeration kit? When it comes to aeration kits, finding the right fit is key. Properly sized aeration units will infuse oxygen into the pond, circulate water, and help create a balanced ecosystem. Your fish will be happier and healthier, and you will have reduced excess organic material in your pond – meaning fewer nutrients to fuel algae growth. When selecting an aeration kit, you need to account for pond shape, depth, and shape. How often do you need to replace the diffuser stick? You only need to replace the diffuser if there is damage. If you are experiencing poor performance and low amounts of air coming out of the stick, start by cleaning off any debris or algae that may have accumulated. If cleaning does not improve performance, then most likely the unit needs a compressor maintenance kit. Can my fish get hurt by the diffuser plates or sticks? Our specially designed diffuser plates have curved/rounded edges with no sharp corners. Also, our PTFE diffuser sticks are cylindrical and smooth, with nothing sticking out that could injure your fish. How often should I install a new maintenance kit? We recommend installing a new maintenance kit every year. Over time the compressor diaphragm(s) can become worn, and this wear will greatly reduce the air output of the unit. Installation is easy and there are step-by-step videos of the process. Will a pond aerator keep an open hole in the ice during winter? Aeration kits infuse oxygen into the water by releasing small bubbles from a diffuser stick, which moves the water and allows for gas exchange. In most climates, aeration is sufficient to maintain open water in even freezing conditions. If you live in a colder climate, however, your water garden may need a little extra help during the winter. In this case, a combination de-icer and aeration kit is a great solution. Using them together will ensure that a hole is kept open in the ice, water circulates properly, and dissolved oxygen levels remain high. Additionally, using a pond aeration kit during winter will allow you to use a smaller wattage de-icer, which could help you save money on your energy bill. Are there other steps needed for winter pond care? During the winter, we recommend moving the diffuser sticks to half your maximum depth. This will help reduce ice formation and keep a pocket of warm water for your fish at the bottom of the pond. Can this unit be placed directly pondside? Yes, it is recommended to place the KoiAir unit pondside out of direct sunlight while also ensuring the compressor has proper ventilation. Out of the box this pump is different. It is heavy and solidly built. The weighted tubing is great too. In my haste to put the pump into service, I must have missed a sticker with the serial number on it. When I registered it online, I supplied the model information we had. The company emailed me and again I thought that was what they needed. I just received a call requesting the serial number. I said I would look again on the housing but would need a few minutes since the pump is now in service at our pond. No problem! They are issuing us a new number and emailing it to us for warranty purposes. Amazing! Now, an additional word about the pump: Not only is it well made, it is whisper quiet! The last air pump we had sounded awful. On a quiet night we could hear it in the bedroom with our windows closed! Do yourself a favor: Don't waste your money on a poorly made pump. This is the best for the money, hands down!
